Maxwell station was first announced as part of the 22-station Thomson line on 29 August 2012.[3][4]
On 15 August 2014, the LTA further announced that the TSL would merge with the Eastern Region line to form the Thomson–East Coast line (TEL). Maxwell station, part of the proposed line, would be constructed as part of TEL3, consisting of 13 stations between Mount Pleasant and Gardens by the Bay.[5][6] With restrictions imposed on construction due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the TEL3 completion date was pushed back by a year to 2022.[7]
Contract T223 for the design and construction of Maxwell Station was awarded to Hock Lian Seng Infrastructure Pte Ltd at a sum of S$222 million in April 2014. Construction began in 2014.[8] On 9 March 2022, Transport Minister S Iswaran announced in Parliament that TEL3 would open in the second half of that year.[9]
This station has stacked platforms, and the station layout similar to Stevens MRT station of the Downtown line. There are three options for the station - 'Maxwell', 'Neil Road' and 'Ann Siang Hill', in the end Maxwell was selected. During construction of the initial MRT system, the name 'Maxwell' referred to what was now Tanjong Pagar MRT station.
There were three COVID-19 confirmed cases detected at the Maxwell MRT station construction site on 2 April 2020. A stop work order was issued as a result from 31 March 2020.[10]
As announced during a visit by Transport Minister S. Iswaran at the Outram Park and Maxwell stations on 7 October 2022, the TEL station began operations on 13 November 2022.[11][12][13]
