Downtown station, then provisionally named Landmark, was first announced in June 2005 as part of the Downtown Extension (DTE) between Millenia and Chinatown stations.[1] Contract C907 for the construction of the station was awarded to Taisei Corporation for S$230 million in December 2007.[2] Originally a branch of the Circle MRT line, the Downtown Extension subsequently became the first stage of the Downtown Line.[3] The station's name was finalised as Downtown on 11 January 2011, adopting the namesake of its line. The station opened on 22 December 2013 together with the rest of Downtown Line Stage 1.[4]

Station details

Downtown station is situated underneath Central Boulevard between the junctions of Straits View and Marina View. It is in the middle of Central Linear Park, where it faces The Promontory on one end and Shenton Way station on the other. It is actually located closer to Marina Bay than Marina Bay station. The station uses a side platform configuration.

Downtown station is connected via a network of underground passageways via Marina Bay Link Mall to Raffles Place station on the North South and East West lines. It is also within walking distance to Marina Bay station of the North South and Circle lines, as well as the future Shenton Way Station on the Thomson–East Coast line. An underground link also leads to Marina Bay Suites, and a link to Marina One is planned in the future.

Illustrations on the walls of the station titled, "Leaves" by Jason Lim shows a connection of dense cell network of bamboo leaves and the business and financial services in the vicinity.[5]
