Fu inaugurata il 20 novembre 1999 in qualità di un'estensione della Jubilee line stessa. La stazione resta un po' ad ovest del centro storico di Southwark, che invece è servito dalle stazioni della metropolitana di London Bridge e Borough, ed è situata all'estremità orientale della strada denominata The Cut.

Originariamente questa stazione non era stata inclusa nel piano di estensione della linea Jubilee, tant'è che non era neppure stato stanziato un finanziamento per un progetto simile. Soltanto l'influenza esercitata dal consiglio comunale ha fatto sì che venisse aggiunta al progetto in corso.

Storia

La stazione di Southwark è stata progettata da Sir Richard MacCormac, uno degli architetti della MJP. Sorge su un sito alquanto angusto su alcune piattaforme sopra il viadotto della principale linea di Victoria tra Waterloo East e London Bridge. La costruzione ha presentato notevoli e svariate difficoltà architettoniche e tecniche, richiedendo per una risoluzione del problema l'installazione di due concorsi a diversi livelli. Le piattaforme sono dotate di porte lungo il bordo e sono collegate all'estremità inferiore del concorso, che è una semplice galleria fra le piattaforme illuminata da fari in vetro e acciaio. L'architetto della stazione, il signor MacCormac, ha dichiarato di aver tratto ispirazione da un progetto del diciannovesimo secolo dell'architetto prussiano Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Nel periodo 2009-2010 i passeggeri fluiti attraverso questa stazione hanno raggiunto il picco dall'anno dell'inaugurazione, toccando i 10 milioni e passa.

Southwark ist eine unterirdische Station der London Underground im Stadtbezirk London Borough of Southwark. Sie liegt in der Travelcard-Tarifzone 1, an der Kreuzung von Blackfriars Road und The Cut. Im Jahr 2014 nutzten 14,15 Millionen Fahrgäste diese von der Jubilee Line bediente Station.[1] Es besteht eine direkte Verbindung zum Bahnhof Waterloo East. Sehenswürdigkeiten in der Nähe sind das Globe Theatre und das Tate Modern. Das historische Zentrum von Southwark liegt nicht hier, sondern weiter südöstlich bei der Station Borough.

It was opened on 20 November 1999 as part of the Jubilee Line Extension.[8] The station is somewhat west of historic Southwark, which is served by Borough and London Bridge stations. Станция находится западнее исторического боро Саутуарк, который обслуживается станциями «Боро» и «Лондон-бридж».
