Warrington Borough Council applied for funding from the Government's New Stations Fund[when?] but the bid failed.[2] However, the council secured part of the funding through other sources and a planning application was approved in 2015, and it was hoped that construction could begin in 2016, until Network Rail increased the estimated cost by £4 million. A fresh bid to the New Stations Fund was successful, and the station opened on 16 December 2019.[3][4]

Services

The station opened on 15 December 2019. It had two trains each hour in each direction calling here off peak (including Sundays) - one express between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Airport via Manchester Piccadilly and one stopping train between Lime Street and Manchester Oxford Road. Extra trains called at peak times.[5] This was one train per hour fewer than Northern had promised in its franchise bid. The COVID-19 crisis saw services reduced to one per hour, and this will not be changed until the new timetable in December 2022.[6]
