Gardiner railway station is located on the Glen Waverley line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the eastern Melbourne suburb of Glen Iris, and opened on 24 March 1890.[1]

History

Gardiner station was named after pastoralist John Gardiner, who settled near the junction of the Yarra River and Gardiners Creek (also named after him) in 1836.[2]

The line to Kooyong was duplicated in 1955,[1] with duplication to Glen Iris occurring in 1957.[3]

The station buildings were rebuilt in 1975,[4] but have since been demolished as part of the grade separation project.

In 1986, manually controlled boom barriers replaced interlocked gates at the former Burke Road level crossing, which was located at the down end of the station.[1]

July 2015 saw the start of a grade separation project to eliminate the Burke Road road and tramway crossing. The station was demolished in September 2015, with a temporary station opening soon after. On 18 January 2016, the new below-ground station opened.[5][6][7]

A signal box was located on Platform 2, at the down end of the station, to control the former road and tramway crossing. It was abolished on 2 January 2016,[8] during the grade separation works.

The station is among sixteen others that are the site of eleven storey high communication towers, aimed to improve identification of trains, and emergency management, around the network.[9]

Gardiner has two side platforms. It is served by Glen Waverley line trains.[10]
