History

The first section of what later became the Glen Waverley line opened on 3 March 1890. It was part of the Outer Circle line, and connected Burnley and Oakleigh stations. After the parts of the Outer Circle line to Oakleigh and Camberwell were closed on 9 December 1895, trains from Burnley terminated at Darling.

For just over a year after it opened, East Malvern was the terminus of the new extension under construction from Darling to Glen Waverley. The rest of the Glen Waverley line was inaugurated on 5 May 1930.[1]

During part of the 1950s and 1960s, there was a short extra dock platform at the down end of Platform 1, making that half of it resemble an island platform. Trains of from one to three cars could fit in the dock platform, but it usually accommodated a single swing-door ("dogbox") car,[2] which ran a shuttle between East Malvern to Glen Waverley,[3] with most trains at night and on weekends terminating at East Malvern. Every second or third East Malvern train connected with the Glen Waverley shuttle. The dock platform had been abolished by 1954.[1]

The line between East Malvern and Darling was duplicated in 1956,[1] with duplication to Mount Waverley occurring in 1964.[1]

The current station buildings were provided in 1975,[4] and parcel facilities were abolished around that time.[5]

The Monash Freeway overpass, located adjacent to the station in the down direction, was opened in around 1987/1988.[6] While the freeway was under construction, the line was slewed to run through an artificial tunnel, and a timber trestle bridge, which crossed over a local creek, was replaced.[7]

East Malvern was upgraded to a Premium Station on 21 August 1995.[8] The footbridge, located at the down end of the station, was replaced in 2009, to accommodate the widening of the Monash Freeway.[9]

There is a Parkiteer secure bike cage located next to the station entrance on Platform 1.[10] A $50 refundable deposit is required to be granted access to the cage.
