Namikawa Station is served by the San'in Main Line (Sagano Line), and is located 23.4 kilometers from the terminus of the line at Kyoto.
The station consists of two opposed side platforms connected to the station building by a footbridge. The station has a Midori no Madoguchi staffed ticket office.

Namikawa Station opened on July 20, 1935. With the privatization of the Japan National Railways (JNR) on April 1, 1987, the station came under the aegis of the West Japan Railway Company. The current station building in 1989 when the station was relocated 120 meters to the north of its original location.
In fiscal 2019, the station was used by an average of 3257 passengers daily.[1]
