The station opened as part of the electrification of the line to Cranbourne.[3]
Flashing lights were provided at the former Thompsons Road level crossing, which was located nearby in the Down direction of the station, in 1977.[4] Boom barriers were provided with the electrification of the line in 1995. The level crossing was grade separated on 25 June 2018, as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project, as well as part of a general upgrade of Thompsons Road.[5][6]
In December 2019, plans were announced by the Level Crossing Removal Project to completely rebuild the station, as part of the Cranbourne line duplication.[7] A second platform was added, and the main entrance moved to a more central location. Part of the new station opened on 18 March 2021,[8] with the remainder of the station completed on 13 February 2022.[9] The duplication also involved a new timetable for the Cranbourne line, with trains operating roughly every 10 minutes in the morning peak.[9]
Platforms and services
Merinda Park has two side platforms. It is serviced by Metro Trains' Cranbourne line services.[10]
Platform 1:
- Cranbourne line all stations and limited express services to Flinders Street; all stations services to Dandenong
Platform 2:
- Cranbourne line all stations services to Cranbourne
It is planned to connect the Cranbourne line to the Sunbury line, through the new Metro Tunnel, in late 2025.

Cranbourne Transit operates two routes to and from Merinda Park station, under contract to Public Transport Victoria:
- 799 : to The Avenue Village Shopping Centre (Cranbourne North)[11]
- 881 : to Clyde North[12]
