The S5 is a railway service of RER Vaud that provides hourly service between Grandson and Bex in the Swiss canton of Vaud. A limited number of trains continue to St-Maurice. Swiss Federal Railways, the national railway company of Switzerland, operates the service.

Operations


The S5 operates every hour between Grandson and Bex (on weekdays) or Aigle (on weekends), using the southern portion of the Jura Foot Line and the Simplon line east of Lausanne. It is paired with the S1, providing half-hourly service between Grandson and Lausanne. The S5 is the faster of the two, making fewer stops. East of Lausanne the S5 is paired with the S2 to Aigle, again providing half-hourly service. The S5 makes all local stops. Most S5 trains begin and terminate at Bex, but there is limited service to St-Maurice.[3][4]


History


RER Vaud introduced the S5 designation with the December 2015 timetable change, replacing the S11, which had operated between Lausanne and Yverdon-les-Bains, just south of Grandson. The new S5 operated from Grandson via Lausanne to Palézieux, on the Lausanne–Bern line.[5][6] With the December 2020 timetable change the eastern terminus was changed from Palézieux to Aigle, replacing the S3, with limited service beyond to Bex and St-Maurice.[7] In December 2021, SBB extended the S5 on weekdays from Aigle to Bex.[8]
