The station opened on 1 September 1923 as an intermediate station on the Jōetsu Line.[citation needed] It became the western terminus of the western section of the Tadami Line, to Oshirakawa, in 1942, and western terminus of the completed line in 1971.[1]
With the privatization of Japanese National Railways (JNR) on 1 April 1987, the station came under the control of JR East.
In fiscal 2015, the station was used by an average of 940 passengers daily (boarding passengers only).[2]
