The station falling on Manamadurai–Virudhunagar line serving the Aruppukkottai town. This station was opened by the then Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, K. Kamaraj on 1963. After broad gauge conversion it was opened by Honorable Minister K. C. Venugopal on 2013. It connects southern districts to delta districts. A proposed new Madurai–Thoothukudi route via this station is under construction, which would make the station become a junction.
